How to choose the right language school

Language courses

If you want to enrol in an English and or French course, there are a wide variety of language schools and courses in Canada.

At the same time, if you plan to work or study in Canada, we recommend you choose a school that has a program that prepares you towards an internationally recognized language certification such as the TESL in English and Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française - D.E.L.F. and the Test d'Évaluation de Français - T.E.F.

You can find all sorts of courses catered to meet your needs, based on your knowledge of the language, the hours you have available for studying, how fast you want to learn and how much you are willing to spend. There is a variety of full-time and part-time courses, as well as residential courses (where they offer accommodation). You can also find intensive courses and specialized options for executives, lawyers, doctors, and other professionals. As you can see, there is a wide range of choices available. We advise you to look around and compare prices, and remember that it is always better to learn a language over a long period rather than trying to take everything in too quickly. Overall make sure you choose the course that is most appropriate to you.

There are also many universities that offer summer English and French courses for foreigners. Most universities also offer English and French courses throughout the regular academic year at a reasonable price for overseas students.

If you already have a residence stay permit (i.e. landed immigrant) you can take night courses at several high schools in Canada that offer English/French programs as a second language for adults.

Private lessons - effective but expensive

You can also take private lessons, which might be more effective but are also more expensive than a language course. You can search for a teacher by advertising in a local newspaper or putting up an ad on the notice boards of universities, schools, or supermarkets.

You can also try finding someone who wants to learn your language in exchange for you learning theirs. This is a good way to meet new people and saves money. Try putting up an ad in the classifieds Language section here at Just Landed.
