English and French certifications

Below there is a list of common standardizes language certifications widely accepted in Canada (especially in Universities). Check with the particular program/university prior to registering to any of these courses/exams.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): It is an exam that you can take at British Council offices in over 100 countries. The score ranges from 1 to 9. To be accepted by most universities you will need to score greater than 6. For further information, go to www.ielts.org .

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): It can be taken in two formats computer-based or paper-based. The former is available in most parts of the world, whilst the latter is for countries where access to computers is limited. To be accepted at most universities you will need to score greater than 550 (with a maximum possible score of 677) to accept you. For more information on this test, visit www.ets.org/toefl .

YUELI (York University English Language Institute). It administers a YELT (York English Language Test) test developed for students wishing to apply to graduate and undergraduate programs at YorkUniversity.

CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English): A very advanced level exam offered by the University of Cambridge. Students with this qualification have achieved a high level of language skills, are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context. They are approaching a standard of English similar to that of an educated native speaker. For more information, go to www.cambridgeesol.org .

CAE (Certificate of Advanced English): An advanced level exam offered by the University of Cambridge. Students with this qualification can communicate with confidence in English and can deal with most aspects of everyday life. DELF/DALF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française / Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française). It is a French language certification test offered by the French Ministry of Education available in over 130 countries.

TEF (Test d'Evaluation de Français) is a certificate delivered by the Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris which is recognized by business firms and educational institutions worldwide.
