Short-term and long-term accommodation

Housing options

Below is a list of the most common accommodation options, ranging from short to long-term:

1. Hotels and hostels:
Usually the easiest place to stay while looking for somewhere to live.

2. Residence (apartment) hotels:
This is also a relatively easy option which usually doesn't have any nasty surprises. However, it is usually more expensive than renting if you plan to stay for more than 3 months.

3. Student accommodation
This includes halls of residence and privately run residences. It is usually cheap solution but must be organized long time in advance.

4. Sharing a flat or house
In terms of value for money this is a good solution, especially if you don't know anyone where you are staying. It can be a good way to improve your language skills and get to know new people.

5. Renting a room, flat, or house
The solution for most people, this can be difficult (especially in Paris) and take time - in some cases several weeks - to find what you are looking for.

6. Buying a flat or house
If you are planning to stay in France for more than 5 years, this might be the most economic solution. Although the housing market is becoming more affordable compared to the last couple years, it can still be quite difficult to find your perfect home.
