requisites to open bank account as a foreigner in Canada

I am not a Canadian Landed immigrant and I will be visiting Canada in May. I want to open a bank account and I need to know if as a tourist I can do that. My home country is capable of siezing my property, including my savings, and I want to take my money out of it.

the last time I checked you needed to have a social insurance number to open a bank account in Canada. I would suggest to call two or three of the major banks to find out
