Basic and Intermediate Level
The following tests are offered by the University of Cambridge:
- KET (Key English Test): An elementary level exam, testing your ability to deal with basic written and spoken communications.
- PET (Preliminary English Test): An intermediate level exam, testing your ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications.
- FCE (First Certificate in English): An upper intermediate level exam - ideal if you can deal confidently with a range of written and spoken communications.

Advanced
If you intend to go for higher education in the UK you will need to have a recognised qualification in English. The diplomas that are generally accepted by most universities are the following:
IELTS (International English Language Testing System): It is an exam that you can take at British Council offices in over 100 countries. The score ranges from 1 to 9. To be accepted by most universities you will need to score greater than 6. For further information, go to www.ielts.org .
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): It can be taken in two formats computer-based or paper-based. The former is available in most parts of the world, whilst the latter is for countries where access to computers is limited. CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English): A very advanced level exam offered by the University of Cambridge. Students with this qualification have achieved a high level of language skills, are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context. CAE (Certificate of Advanced English): An advanced level exam offered by the University of Cambridge. Students with this qualification can communicate with confidence in English and can deal with most aspects of everyday life. Teaching English
The most widely recognised qualification in the world for those who teach English as a second language is the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language).
