Who needs a visa to visit Hungary?

Requirements and exceptions

Who needs a visa to visit Hungary?

Whether or not you need a visa to Hungary depends on a variety of factors: your nationality, the purpose and the expected duration of your stay, as well as other things like family relations and your employment status.

Hungary joined the European Union in 2004, so citizens of the EU and EEA member states do not require a visa. The only documentation they require is either their passport or identity card. These countries are:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden (new type of identity card) and the United Kingdom.

Apart from the citizens of these 31 countries, the citizens of the following nations do not need a visa to enter Hungary with their private passport provided that:

  •  their stay does not exceed 90 days and
  •  the purpose of their visit is not employment or other income-earning activity: Andorra (also with identity card), Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Costa Rica, USA, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region passport), Croatia (also with identity card), Israel, Japan, Korean Republic, Macao (Special Administrative Region passport), Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, El Salvador, San Marino, Switzerland (also with identity card), Singapore, New Zealand, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela.

Schengen Agreement

Hungary is a signatory of the Schengen Agreement. Therefore a visa for Hungary entitles you to travel within the whole Schengen area . This way you do not need to apply for a separate visa to enter Schengen Treaty member states. The opposite is true as well: a ’Schengen visa’ is valid for entry to Hungary.

Non EU/EEA citizens

Citizens of Non-EU/EEA countries (those who are required to get a visa) can apply for various types of visas. The visa type you should apply for depends on the purpose and the duration of your stay. It is very important to apply for the correct type of visa, because you cannot change your status in Hungary after entry. To do this you will normally have to leave the country, apply for the correct type of visa and then return to Hungary once it has been granted.

You can apply for a short-term or a long-term visa. The application process for a long-term visa usually takes between 30 and 60 days; while an application for a short-term visa will normally be processed in 5 to 15 days. The application fee for the visa that you will be charged depends on the country of application, ask in the Hungarian consulate in your current country of residence for details (this is also where you will need to make the application for a visa).

In case of a long-term visa first you will receive a Visa which you can travel into Hungary with. This Visa is valid for 30 days from the date you entered the Schengen Area. During this period you will need to go to the Hungarian Immigration Office in person to receive the final Schengen Residence Permit and to arrange the Address Registration too.

Family members

Family members can get this type of visa for the same period as the head of the family. The process is the same and the applications should be made at the same time. The applicant has to prove that he/she will have accommodation, financial means with which to live, cover/insurance for health care treatment, the means to pay for education for minors and any other requirements specified by the consulate handling the application. Proof of the family relation will be required in the form of birth and/or marriage certificates.

//// DONT COME TO HUNGARY ////

    Hello all,
Regarding Hungarians and life in Hungary? I DONT RECOMMEND YOU TO LIVE IN HUNGARY or even come to visit it because if you decide to stay…. The hell in your life is going to start.
If you are not able to speak this language you are going to be mistreated in this land wherever you go, you are going to see yourself in trouble if you don’t have your wife or husband “attached on you” but even then, they don’t really care you.
You will be mistreated at supermarkets, stores, banks and so on. so, they don’t like foreigners at all and they hate each other (beside they are very, extremely envy) imagine an immigrants???
You even cannot ask police’s help in any trouble you get in (even if it is not your fault) because they lie in cold blood and they corrupt in every way that they really are keen to screw you. It is so simple, just accuse you, arrest you and after hours under the “communism style” they will call the “Hungarian Perfect Law” to sue you because they don’t believe on foreigner’s word but they believe on cold blood liar Hungarians words.
In the country you are controlled in every way. They
If somebody says that, you stole something, or you drove on dangerous way, that is it. You are going to receive a letter at your door saying you have to drag you lawyer they defend yourself because the big sue just started.
They can keep you waiting for over a year to get documents they “recommend” you to go to court for something to be done but after all, the court says they cannot do anything because what is “Hungarian Rules” it have to be kept. Why did they “recommend” then? Another case, a person was fired from the company with no wages because the person usually arrived late a t workplace. The person said that, he/she would sue the company but the “Hungarian HR” said: You even can win but, we are going to screw you up on your work papers and referring papers. If you owe the electricity company, they can simple ask your employer to block your salary until you pay the electricity company, how is it possible? Welcome to Hungary. I can mention 7 more case but this letter would have 2 pages.
They are not cordial at all at tram, buses, metro or so. They don’t really care people, they don’t have human side to be able to consider the immigrant, and they don’t ask the elder to seat when this person is standing in front of them. They don’t care children so, in other words, they hate immigrants because they are envy because the cannot speak another language and they also hate Chinese because the “allege” Chinese make the market go on bankrupt with lower prices but this is lie due the limited mind of Hungarian who have not capacity to think further then get more competitive.
They are so racist. They say Indians are cheap; Africans have lower knowledge and QI because they answer questions with delays. They say that South Americans are poor and unskilled people. Now I ask you all, what the hell this proud ness of them comes from? From a fucked country which depends exclusively on external investments? Without cut edge technology and competitive market? Proud of what? This language that nobody cares? They judge themselves as clever of “Central Europe”, they even don’t consider they are East European.
Sorry for those hard words but they are true. My husband doesn’t like his own country because of all those things that happened in there but people don’t speak out.
When I use to live there I could be present almost in many shit situations that happened to people in there, because they control your life, make it harder and control you from your front house, your workplace, religion and more.
    Just think twice.

      Grate Hungary!!

      Dear Maria!
I never heard such negativ opinion about Hungary!!! I come from Hungary, but I'm living in Denmark. I know to live in Hungary and arrange there anything can get very hard. But I really think, that you shouldn't destroy the image of hugary with your negativ letter. You probably met with the wrong people in the wrong time and maybe they were very roud to you, because that was you expected!!( but you can get negativ experiences from any country)
All the hungarian people I know- and I know lots of them!!!- they nothing like you explained in your horrible letter. I also invited many people from abroud to visit Hungary: (USA,Germany,Denmark,Norwage) and THEY ALL LOVED HUNGARY VERY MUCH!!!! I know it is difficult that the older generation doesn't speak english, but the youngers do speak!!(maybe you asked the wrong persons for help again) and if you lived there you could have start to learn hungarian too!!!!
I really think it is not a nice message you sent out with your email- and you shouldn't generalizing Hungary and hungarians by your bad experiences!! because most of the bad things you wrote about Hunagry and the hungarians thats a lie!!!-from my point of view!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure if I would be an emmegrant in your country I could complain as much as you did in your letter!!! and i don't know where did you get these thoughts about Africans, South Americans and Indians!!! As a hungarien disagreeeeee again!!!!!

      love Budapest

Sorry u have bad memory but so far I can tell it could happen to u anywhere in the world. I think Budapest is the most amazing pace, if u become narrow u never makeit anywhere not even theworking place....

      I agree with you

I have to admit, that despite of the harsh words and anger that shines through Maria's message, I do agree with her. This is a country hard to handle even for me, who was born there, spent her youth there. Coming back to my own country always leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. This country is sometimes unreal, like a bad time travel or a nightmare that I usually wake up from when I fly out back to my current home, New Zealand.

      hmmmm

maria.well i read your story its really heart touching....but if the whites or hungarians visits africa and other places they treat them well and care for them.they are just too bad

    • sol not 22 Nov 2011, 12:16

      really

Maria I lived in China and i can say a lot of good things about the Chinese and lots of bad things too... The bottom line is, I had both, very good and very bad experiences, however, I would never judge the entire nation !!!
I think Hungarians are indeed difficult people but this is cultural identity, but if we live in country, as an outsider we have the moral obligation to integrate to their pace of life and not the other way around. That is why I was able to have some amazing experiences whilst in China specially when I made the effort to speak their very hard language!
Maybe, you wanted to be treated and seen in Hungary the same way as in your own country!
i am Brazilian and if anyone thinks I'm uneducated poverty stricken, or have a problem with my nationality, it's not my job to change their minds. We have to learn to draw the boundaries and accept people the way they are!
I love Hungary and i don't give a fine toss if anyone doesn't want me there... I always enjoy it and to me that's enough!!! i hope you have a better experiences next time!

      Have a bit more respect!

Well Maria I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience in Hungary, you right this is a hard place to live. Clearly even your English is not good enough to express yourself so no wonder the Hungarians can't understand you. No matter how many bad experience you had you can not speak so harshly of a whole country! There are some beautiful people who could teach you a bit of manners to start of with but also a lot of history so you would understand the bitterness that people have in them. I suggest before you use such ugly words to describe 11 million people get your facts straight and learn to have a bit more respect to the country and it's people who took you in and if not pack your things and go home! I'm sure you will be much happier..
