How to organise a trip to Angola

Angola is a country with an incredibly diverse nature and definitely worth a visit, although it is still being rebuilt after the Civil War. As an expat you should plan your trip or your move carefully. Here you can find the necessary information.

All visitors to Angola are strongly advised to travel with an organisation. Leisure travelling on your own is not recommended! Furthermore you should register at your embassy on arrival and de-register on departure for safety reasons.

Even after the end of the Civil War in 2002 the crime rate in Angola is still very high and it is quite dangerous to explore the country without an experienced guide. Armed robberies still occur, especially at night, as well as during the day. So make sure you check the travel warnings on the website of your Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Flights

Angola’s main international airport Quatro de Fevereiro Airport is located in Luanda, the capital of the country. The following airlines fly to Luanda: Aeroflot Russian Airlines, Air Canada, Air France, Air Namibia, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Iberia, Kenya Airways, KLM, Royal Air Maroc, South African Airlines, TAAG Angola Airlines, TAP Portugal, United Airlines and US Airways.

If you like to travel within the country, you should have a look at the website of TAAG Angola Airlines , which connects bigger cities.

Hotel

If you need to stay in a hotel in Angola, you should choose one of the better quality ones. Be careful with eating salads or drinking tap water. Always order mineral water. Hotels and restaurants in the bigger cities usually meet certain quality standards, nevertheless, there is the risk of stomach upsets and other illnesses, especially if you are new to the country.

A list of hotels can be found on the website of the Embassy of Angola in Washington D.C.

Activities

You should plan your activities well and take trips under the guidance of a tourism organisation!

Additionally, you should visit Angola during the summer and not during the rainy season from November to April. In April heavy rainfalls and strong storms are common. So, if you are planning to do a safari or visit one of the wonderful National Parks, you should avoid the rainy months.

During city trips be careful when taking pictures, especially of public buildings like transport facilities or military and police equipment. This is prohibited and in the worst case you can get arrested.
