Freies Gymnasium Zürich was founded as a private Gymnasium in 1888 and is one of the oldest Gymnasiums in Zurich.
It enjoys long-standing tradition and is a state-recognised school. Freies Gymnasium Zürich is located in the attractive Seefeld district in Zurich.
In the liberal-minded school with its roots in the humanistic tradition and Christian ethos students are guided and supported in their efforts to achieve success in the Swiss Matura examination and to develop independence.
Bilingual Education at its Best
Together with Lakeside School (Küsnacht) Freies Gymnasium Zürich is the pioneer of bilingual education in the Canton of Zurich (Our Bilingual Way). They were the first school in the Canton of Zurich establishing a truly bilingual education from Kindergarten right through to the Swiss Matura.
Lessons are taught by special subject teachers and the programmes are aimed at students with very good knowledge of both German and English who have no difficulty following lessons at native-speaker level.
Education programmes
Freies Gymnasium Zürich offers the following programmes:
- Preparatory Class 1 following grade 5 of the primary school
- Preparatory Class 2 following grade 6 of the primary school
- Progymnasium following grade 6 of the primary school: monolingual or bilingual
- Lower School of the Gymnasium following grade 6 of the primary school: monolingual or bilingual
- Upper School of the Gymnasium following the first two years of the Lower School of the Gymnasium or class 2 or 3 of the secondary level: monolingual or bilingual
Study profiles
In the Upper School of the Gymnasium the following study profiles can be chosen:
- Classics with Latin, and English or Greek as core subjects
- Modern Languages with Italian as core subject
- Economics and Law with «Economics and Law» as core subject
- Mathematics - Natural Sciences with Biology and Chemistry, or Applied Mathematics and Physics as core subjects
Each profile is offered monolingually or bilingually.
